Lower Colton, Kentucky
Colton is the largest town on the layout and is serviced by both the C&OV and C&O. The C&O's Colton Yard boasts four classification tracks, an Arrival/Departure track, and a service track which accommodates servicing facilities for both steam and diesel locomotives. The steam facility features a turntable, 15-stall roundhouse, and concrete coaling tower. Diesel servicing is provided by fuel and sand utilities as well as a 2-stall engine house. The Collins Cement Company is located within yard limits and is serviced twice a day by a C&O switcher. The other industry served by the C&O is the National Ice & Cold Storage Company. Colton Yard receives transfer runs from Ashland, KY staging (C&OV) and Lexington, KY staging (L&N and Southern). Hidden under the upper part of Colton is a five-track staging yard representing the C&O line from Frankfort, KY, and a second, five-track staging yard representing the coal marshaling yards of Huntington, WV.
